John Wood Soccer Makes History, Will Play for Regional Championship at Home Saturday

QUINCY, Ill. The John Wood Community College soccer team is already in the midst of the best season in program history, and on Saturday, the Trail Blazers will have an opportunity to add another milestone in front of their hometown fans.

John Wood enters the regional championship game with a 10-3-3 record, the best mark in school history. The team also captured the regular-season region championship for the first time, making 2026 a breakthrough season for the Quincy-based program.

Now, for the first time, John Wood will host a regional championship game on its home field.

The championship match is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 31, at Quincy Recycle Field on the John Wood Community College campus, giving local soccer fans an opportunity to watch the Trail Blazers compete for a regional title without leaving Quincy.

Coach Bob Cowman says that one of the biggest reasons for the team’s success has been the way the players have come together despite arriving with a variety of backgrounds and experiences.

“This group has come together as a team,” Cowman told Quincy Current. “With a variety of backgrounds, it can sometimes be difficult to mesh. They have learned to play for each other. The results speak for themselves.”

Those results have produced a season unlike any John Wood soccer team has experienced before.

The 10 victories have established a new program benchmark, while the regular-season region championship marked another first for John Wood.

Saturday’s game will now bring another historic moment, the first time the Trail Blazers have played a regional championship match on their home field.

Beyond the numbers, Cowman’s comments reflect a team that has developed chemistry at the right time. Players from different backgrounds have learned to function as a single unit, translating that cohesion into victories and a place in the championship game.

The historic season also gives Quincy-area sports fans another local team to rally around as postseason competition reaches its biggest stage.

John Wood will take the field Saturday with a chance to turn an already record-setting season into a regional championship season.

And for the first time, they will get that opportunity at home.
