Popular Bodum coffee makers sold at local retailers like Walmart, Target and other retailers over more than five decades are affected by a nationwide recall.

Nearly 6 million French press coffee makers sold across the United States are being recalled after dozens of consumers reported suffering burns when the glass containers unexpectedly shattered during use.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced Thursday, Oct. 29, that Bodum USA Inc. is recalling approximately 5.9 million French press coffee makers equipped with replaceable glass carafes.

According to federal safety officials, the company has identified 70 reports of glass carafes breaking during use, including 48 reports involving burn injuries.

The recall affects several popular Bodum coffee maker models sold at major retailers, including Walmart and Target, as well as Amazon and other online stores. The products were sold nationwide between 1974 and October 2026, meaning even coffee makers purchased decades ago could be affected.

Which coffee makers are being recalled?

The recall covers Bodum French press coffee makers with 8-cup and 12-cup replaceable glass carafes in the following eight product lines:

• Bistro

• Brazil

• Caffettiera

• Chambord

• Crema

• Java

• Jesper

• Kenya

The Bodum name typically appears on the coffee maker’s frame and inner lid. It is also engraved on the glass carafe, along with product safety warnings.

Smaller 3-cup and 4-cup models are not included in the announced recall.

Consumers can examine photographs and product identification information through the official CPSC recall notice.

Where were the coffee makers sold?

Federal officials said the affected French presses were sold at Walmart, Target, coffee shops, home goods stores and other retailers nationwide.

They were also available through several major websites, including Amazon.com, Walmart.com, Target.com and Bodum.com.

The products originally retailed for approximately $15 to $65, depending on the model.

The recall encompasses products sold over a period of more than 50 years. The coffee makers were manufactured in Portugal and Thailand and imported by Bodum USA Inc., based in New York.

What caused the recall?

According to the CPSC, the glass carafes can break unexpectedly during normal coffee preparation if they have previously been cracked or damaged.

One potential source of damage is the use of metal spoons or other metal utensils to stir coffee directly inside the glass container.

Scratches or damage to the glass can compromise its integrity, creating the possibility that the carafe will break while holding hot liquid.

Such breakage can expose consumers to scalding coffee and potentially serious burn injuries.

Bodum said in a statement Thursday that the recall is intended to reinforce existing safety instructions and prevent additional injuries.

The company emphasized that consumers should never use cracked or damaged glass carafes or metal utensils inside the containers.

What should consumers do?

Consumers who own an affected coffee maker should immediately stop using metal spoons or utensils to stir coffee inside the glass carafe.

Any carafe showing cracks or other damage should not be used.

Rather than replacing the entire coffee maker, Bodum is providing affected consumers with a free plastic stirring spoon and an additional warning label explaining how to avoid damaging the glass.

The recall is classified as a repair remedy, not a refund or full product replacement.

Consumers can request the recall materials directly from Bodum.

Consumers urged to check older coffee makers

Because the recall includes products sold as far back as 1974, consumers are encouraged to check older Bodum French presses that may have remained in use for years.

The recall applies nationwide, including to affected products purchased by consumers in Quincy and throughout west-central Illinois.

Residents who are uncertain whether their coffee maker is included can compare its design and product information with the photographs provided by federal safety officials or contact Bodum directly.
